FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) - Arkansas outfielder Tyler Spoon was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced on Monday by the league office.
Spoon is the third Razorback freshman to earn a weekly honor from the conference office. Pitchers Trey Killian and Colin Poché were each selected as SEC Freshman of the Week earlier in the season.
A native of Van Buren, Ark., Spoon had a strong weekend at the plate in the Razorbacks' series victory over then-No. 15 Mississippi State. Spoon hit .417 (5-for-12) in the series vs. the Bulldogs with a RBI and three runs scored. Spoon had multiple hits in the first two games of the series vs. MSU and came through with the eventual game-winning RBI double in the series finale. Arkansas went on to win the series wrap-up 3-1 and take two of three games in the series.
Spoon is the only Razorback to start all 29 games this season and is second on the team with a .325 batting average. Spoon leads the team with three homers and 34 RBI. Along with leading the team, Spoon ranks tied for third in the SEC in RBI.
Spoon and the rest of the No. 12 Arkansas baseball team continue SEC play this weekend, traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face the Alabama Crimson Tide. Game times for the weekend series are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, 6:35 p.m. on Friday and 1:05 p.m. on Saturday. The series opener on Thursday will be televised by ESPNU.
