Monroe, La. - The Central Arkansas softball team travelled to Monroe, Louisiana on Wednesday to face off with Louisiana-Monroe, and for the first time since March 13, the Bears suffered a mid-week loss. The Warhawks took down the Bears in 3-2.
Both pitchers were effective early, combining to allow just one hit through the game's first three innings. Louisiana-Monroe (19-27) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, when third baseman Alexis Cacioppo blasted her seventh home run of the season to left-center field.
Central Arkansas (31-17) struck back in the top of the sixth, tying the game at one. A fly out started the inning before right fielder Sam Forrest drew a walk. Forrest moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from shortstop Lissa Avitia before advancing to third base on a fielding error. With runners on the corners and two outs, left fielder Sarah Bigej came through for the Bears singling to the shortstop to bring in Forrest.
The Bears wasted little time in breaking the 1-1 tie, adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Center fielder Ashley Boswell led off the inning with a walk, moving over to second on a bunt single by center fielder Amy Gunnells. A fielder's choice off the bat of designated player Jessie Taylor saw Boswell erased at third. Forrest then laced a single off the center field wall, driving in Gunnells from second to give Central Arkansas the 2-1 lead. A ground out and a lineout ended the Bear threat.
The Warhawks refused to surrender though, plating a pair in the bottom half of the seventh to collect the 3-2 walk-off win. Right fielder Haley McCall led off the inning with a bloop single that floated just over the outstretched glove of Boswell. Then, with a 1-1 count, Cacippo collected her second homer of the day, on a blast to right-center field.
Stephanie Routzon (11-12) earned the win for Louisiana-Monroe, throwing seven innings and limiting the Bears to two runs on five hits. She issued two walks and struck out four. Kelsie Armstrong (24-11) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six in six innings.
Central Arkansas returns to the field for their final home series this weekend. The Bears will host Lamar in a double-header beginning at 11:00 Saturday morning, before closing out their home schedule with a single game at 1:00 Sunday afternoon. The Bears will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, honoring the achievements of seniors Kelsie Armstrong, Melanie Bryant, Melissa Bryant, Cristin Curl, and Stephanie Lasley.
