Oeiras, Portugal (Sports Network) - Top seed David Ferrer needed all three sets to win his week-opening match Wednesday at the $535,000 Portugal Open tennis event.

The world No. 4 Ferrer held off game Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in 1 hour, 49 minutes in a second-round affair at this clay-court French Open tune-up.

Ferrer, who dropped his opening match in Barcelona last week, will meet Romanian veteran Victor Hanescu in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday.

Hanescu posted Wednesday's lone upset by ousting sixth-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

In other second-round action on Day 3, fourth-seeded Fabio Fognini outlasted fellow Italian Paolo Lorenzi 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-4 and upstart Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta overcame Belgian David Goffin 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Fognini will battle the 21-year-old qualifier Carreno-Busta in the round of eight.

The 2013 Portugal Open winner will collect $96,000.
