Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Former San Diego Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding has retired from the NFL, with the nine-year veteran making his decision public in an interview with the Iowa City Press-Citizen published Thursday.

Kaeding appeared in San Diego's first three games of the 2012 season and connected on all seven of his field-goal attempts and six extra-point tries before suffering a groin injury that placed him on injured reserve.

He was eventually released before being picked up by the Miami Dolphins, where he was 1-for-3 on field goals in two games with the team.

The two-time Pro Bowler spent his first nine years with the Chargers after the team drafted him in the third round of the 2004 draft.

He made 181-of-210 career field goal attempts and 352-of-354 extra points.
