NORMAN, Okla. (UCA) -- University of Central Arkansas' Julia Roth shot an opening round of 2-under 70 on Thursday and sits in a four-way tie for ninth place at the NCAA Central Regional being played at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
Roth, a senior from Karlskrona, Sweden and the reigning Southland Conference Women's Golfer of the Year, had five birdies and three bogeys on the day, but birdied two of her final four holes to finish at 2-under, just three strokes out of the lead. Oklahoma's Emily Collins shot a 5-under 67 on her home course to take the first-day lead. Elcin Ulu of Florida is alone in second at 68, followed by a six-way tie at 69.
Round 2 will be played Friday, with the final round set for Saturday. Roth tees off at 12:45 Friday.
Roth is competing with five other individuals and 24 full squads in the Central Regional. A field of 126 players will advance to the NCAA Championships, with eight teams and two individuals advancing from each of the three regionals.The championship will be held May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
