HOOVER, Ala. (Univ. of Ark.) - Arkansas junior pitcher Barrett Astin has been recognized for his work off the field as he was named to the SEC Baseball Community Service Team on Monday.

A member of the University of Arkansas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Astin has volunteered his time with the Sweat Hawgs Salute to Excellence program, the Razorback Canned Food Drive and Shop with Razorback SAAC. Astin has also visited the Maples Nursing Home and participated in Christmas Angel Tree shopping for students at Leverett Elementary. This past December, Astin went on a mission trip with several of his teammates to the Dominican Republic.

On the field, Astin has been one of the best pitchers on the Razorback pitching staff, which leads the country with a team ERA of 1.90. The Forrest City, Ark., native has pitched in 16 games, 12 as a starter, and has a 4-4 record with one save and a 2.02 ERA. Astin currently ranks seventh in the SEC in ERA. In 75.2 innings pitched, Astin has struck out 73 batters, while opposing hitters are batting .254 against him.

The SEC supports a community service team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports. The community service team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community in superior service efforts.

Astin and the rest of the 13th-ranked Razorbacks open play in the 2013 SEC Tournament on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. against the winner of the first round game between No. 6 seed Ole Miss and No. 11 seed Kentucky. The Rebels and Wildcats will meet on Tuesday morning at 9:30. Wednesday's game will be televised on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS), Cox Sports Television (CST) and will also be available on ESPN3.
