Palermo, Italy (Sports Network) - Roberta Vinci upended fellow Italian and
defending champion Sara Errani on Sunday to claim the title at the $235,000
Italiacom Open tennis event.
The 30-year-old Vinci snapped a five-match losing skid against the 26-year-old
top-seeded Errani and pocketed $42,000, thanks to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 triumph
accomplished in 2 hours, 11 minutes on the clay courts.
It was the first all-Italian final in the tournament since the 2009
championship featured Flavia Pennetta topping Errani in straight sets.
Vinci ripped off seven aces to none against Errani, also forcing her opponent
into six double faults en route to victory.
On Saturday, Errani posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over fourth-seeded Czech Klara
Zakopalova after the second-seeded Vinci battled back to beat Spaniard
Estrella Cabeza Candela, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
Vinci now owns a 9-1 record in career singles finals and claimed her
second title in 2013.
