Tashkent, Uzbekistan (Sports Network) - Top seed Bojana Jovanovski was a
second-round winner Wednesday at the Tashkent Open, but defending champion
Irina-Camelia Begu was eliminated.
Jovanovski topped Japan's Misaki Doi, 6-2, 7-5, and has reached her second
quarterfinal of 2013. The Serb also went to the round of eight at the season
opener in Shenzen and lost to eventual champ Li Na.
Next up for Jovanovski will be Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva. The seventh
seed thumped Israel's Julia Glushko, 6-3, 6-1.
Spain's Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor knocked off the sixth-seeded Begu with a 6-1,
7-5 triumph and will next face third-seeded Yvonne Meusburger. The Austrian
veteran advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Petra Cetkovska of the Czech
Last year's runner-up was also sent home, as Olga Govortsova of Belarus dumped
fourth-seeded Croat Donna Vekic, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Govortsova will take on
Romania's Alexandra Cadantu in the quarterfinals, as the fifth seed posted a
6-1, 6-3 rout of the Ukraine's Nadiya Kichenok.
Luxembourg's Mandy Minella and Italy's Natassja Burnett were the other winners
Wednesday and will meet in Thursday's quarterfinals. Minella rallied for a
4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Serbia's Vesna Dolonc, while Burnett also went the
distance in a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) win over Japanese qualifier Risa Ozaki.
