FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) - Competing among the nation's best collegiate tennis competition, Yang Pang earned back-to-back wins on Tuesday and pulled within one more victory of advancing to main draw singles at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Competing in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Pang began the day with a quick win over preseason ITA singles No. 116 Augustina Eskenazi of Penn, 6-1, 6-1. The sophomore from Nanjing, China, then turned around the same day and battled out a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over No. 46 Daneika Borthwick of Florida State.
Ranked preseason singles No. 43 by the ITA, Pang improved to 4-1 over her last five matches, including three straight wins over ranked opponents. Pang also defeated preseason No. 47 Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma at the Little Rock Classic, Sept. 22.
"Getting through two tough rounds of qualifying in the same day at Riviera is a fantastic achievement," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "It ranks up there with 'Nicky's' best performance as a Razorback. Hopefully she will find enough in the tank to produce another great day Wednesday."
Pang will face off against Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine today at 11:45 a.m., as the winner advances on to main draw singles play at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. The first round of main draw singles competition is set to begin Thursday.
