MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Sirgregory Thornton scored on a 3-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to lift Arkansas State past South Alabama, 17-16 on Saturday night.
The Red Wolves trailed 6-0 in the second quarter after Aleem Sunanon's two field goals for South Alabama (3-5, 1-3 Sun Belt). Thornton's 3-yard scoring run came after Sunanon kicked his third field goal to stretch a 16-10 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
Quarterback Adam Kennedy ran the ball in from 12 yards out in the third quarter to give Arkansas State (4-4, 2-1) a brief 7-6 lead. Kennedy finished with 136 yards passing and led his team with 65 yards rushing.
Ross Metheny finished with 228 yards passing with one interception, leading South Alabama with 77 yards rushing.
The most the Jaguars have lost by this season is seven, and three of their losses have been by just one point.
