UAM Softball Starts GAC Schedule 2-0

MONTICELLO, Ark. (UAM) - The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team opened Great American Conference competition with a pair of road victories on Friday over Southwestern Oklahoma State, winning the first game 10-7 and the second game 8-6 in 10 innings.

The Blossoms (9-4, 2-0 GAC) erased a 5-1 deficit in the first game with four runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by doubles from sophomoreKali Piha, senior Beth Johnson and senior Channing Tharpe.

After SWOSU (3-7, 0-2 GAC) regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, UAM responded with three runs in the top of the sixth, again using extra base hits as the method of run production with doubles from Piha and senior Hannah Pendley. UAM capped the scoring in the top of the seventh with a two-run homerun from sophomore Taylor Norris.

Pendley led UAM offensively with a 4-for-5 perfomance, while Piha followed with a 3-for-4 outing including two doubles and three runs batted in. Senior Courtney Wilson (4-2) earned the win despite allowing seven runs off 11 hits. Junior Katie Slaughter earns the save, her first of the year, after keepingSWOSU scoreless in the final 1.1 innings.

In the second game, UAM rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homerun by senior Brittany Eitel, to send the gameinto extra innings. The Blossoms used the long ball earlier in the game fortheir first two runs with a two-run homerun by junior Briana Daugherty.

In extras, each team added one run in the eighth inning. UAM escaped the ninth inning after SWOSU loaded the bases with one out before UAM hurler Katie Slaughter got herself out of that jam with a strikeout and a groundout.

Piha broke a 6-all tie in the top of the 10th inning with a two-run homerun, which held on to the game-winning blast.

Slaughter went the distance for the Blossoms to improve her record to 5-2 this season.

The two squads are back in action on Saturday with a double-header starting at noon to close out the four game series.
