Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Askia Booker scored 16 points and Xavier
Johnson added 15, leading Colorado to a 67-57 victory over Dayton in the first
round of the Charleston Classic.
Josh Scott chipped in 13 points and Spencer Dinwiddie had 12 for the Buffaloes
(2-0), who opened the season last week with a win over Wofford and on Friday
will play the winner between Baylor and Boston College.
Vee Sanford scored 13 points to lead Dayton (1-1), which beat Arkansas State
in its opener last Saturday. Kevin Dillard and Josh Benson each contributed 10
points in defeat.
Neither team led by more than four in a tight first half, but the Flyers
scored the final seven points to grab a 27-23 edge at the break. Dayton built
a 35-27 advantage early in the second half before the Buffaloes stormed back.
Booker knocked down a three to ignite a 16-2 Colorado run. A Dinwiddie triple
put the Buffs ahead 39-37 before an Andre Roberson steal and layup made it
43-37 with 11 1/2 minutes remaining.
The Flyers tied it 47-47 on a Dillard basket, but Booker answered with a trey
and Scott made two from the line soon after for a five-point edge and the
Buffs led the rest of the way.
Two free throws from Dillard kept Dayton within five with just over two
minutes left, but Booker canned another shot from beyond the arc to stretch
the margin to eight and essentially seal the contest.
The Buffs finished 7-of-15 from three-point range and shot 45.1 percent
overall, while Dayton made just 32.8 percent from the field.
