Huntsville, TX (Sports Network) - Jonathan Mills scored 18 points as he led
the Southern Miss Golden Eagles to a 74-56 victory over the Liberty Flames in
sub-regional play of the Legends Classic.
Mills shot 7-of-8 from the floor and led the Golden Eagles (5-0) with eight
rebounds. Dwayne Davis added 14 points while Norville Carey recorded 13 points
and six rebounds off the bench.
John Caleb Sanders was the key source of offense for the Flames (0-6) with 15
points and six rebounds. Tavares Speaks was the only teammate to join him in
double-figures with 10 points off 3-of-10 shooting. JR Coronado brought down a
team-high nine rebounds.
Southern Miss took a 31-25 lead into the break after shooting 60.0 percent
from the field and holding Liberty to just 32.0 percent.
The second half was much like the first with the Golden Eagles outscoring the
Flames 43-31 while shooting 60.7 percent from the floor.
Throughout the game Southern Miss shot 60.4 percent from the floor while the
Flames struggled shooting only 34.0 percent including an 8-of-30 effort
from 3-point range. Liberty has now lost its first six games of the
season while the Eagles have won their first five.
