Anchorage, AK (Sports Network) - Quincy Ford scored 14 points to lead the
Northeastern Huskies to a 61-52 triumph over the UC Riverside Highlanders in
the opening game of the Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.
Joel Smith added 11 points and four assists for Northeastern (3-1).
Josh Fox scored 14 points and brought down six rebounds as the only player
for UC Riverside (1-4) in double figures.
Northeastern shot 48.0 percent from the floor in the first half including
7-of-13 from 3-point range to take a 38-20 lead into halftime. UC Riverside
lagged behind shooting just 33.3 percent.
The tables turned in the second half with the Highlanders heating up to 51.9
percent and the Huskies dropping to 31.3 percent shooting. The Huskies were
able to hold the Highlanders off with a 12-1 edge in points from the free
throw line.
Points from the free throw line were crucial in this contest as the Huskies
outscored the Highlanders 19-3 overall from the charity stripe.
