Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Semaj Christon led four Musketeers in double
figures with 23 points as Xavier defeated the Drexel Dragons, 69-65, in the
second round of the DirectTV Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.
Christon was 10-of-14 shooting from the floor and added six assists in the
Xavier (4-1) victory. Justin Martin chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds.
Jeff Robinson and Dee Davis added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Dragons (1-4) were paced by Damion Lee's 19 points. Frantz Massenat
got into the mix with 18 points and four assists. Tavon Allen also contributed
13 points off the bench in the setback.
The first half ended with a Drexel on top, 27-26. Xavier trailed at the
intermission despite shooting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc while Drexel converted
just 1-of-6 attempts from distance. The Dragons were able to capitalize on the
Musketeers' miscues to score 12 points off of turnovers while limiting Xavier
managed no points off of turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
Xavier took the lead just after the second half tipped off and never looked
back. Despite Drexel holding Xavier to just 2-of-9 shooting from behind the
three-point line, the Musketeers managed to outscore the Daragons 43-38 during
the course of the second half.
The Musketeers outrebounded the Dragons, 27-19, and limiting themselves to
only 11 turnovers. The winner will advance to play either Drake and Rice in
the next final round.
