Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Akil Mitchell recorded a double-double
as he helped guide the Virginia Cavaliers to a 46-38 win over the Tennessee
Volunteers at John Paul Jones Arena.
Mitchell scored 13 points to go with 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers (7-2) in
their sixth straight win. Joe Harris, who made the only three-point basket for
Virginia, chipped in 13 points to go with six boards
The Volunteers (4-3) were paced by Trae Golden with a team-high 11 points.
Jarnell Stokes contributed nine boards and five points in the team's second
straight setback.
Virginia made 11-of-28 from the floor through the first 20 minutes of action,
giving it a 25-16 lead at the half. Tennessee was held to 8-of-25 from the
field and missed all eight chances behind the three-point line in the period.
Tennessee made some progress in the second half, hitting 3-of-11 from beyond
the arc and holding Virginia to 8-of-25 from the field. The Cavaliers still
managed to outscore the Volunteers 22-21 in the frame for the win.
The hosts survived despite shooting just 35.8 percent from the floor,
including 1-of-8 behind the three-point line. Tennessee also had trouble
shooting from the field (.288) and made only 3-of-19 behind the arc.
The 38 points by the Vols marks the third-lowest output by the school since
1985 when the shot clock came into play.
