Norfolk, VA (Sports Network) - Troy Daniels tied the school record with eight
makes from beyond the arc as the Virginia Commonwealth Rams picked up an 83-70
win over the Old Dominion Monarchs in matchup between former conference rivals
at the Ted Constant Center.
Daniels finished with a team-high 24 points for VCU (6-3), which picked up its
third victory in a row. Treveon Graham just missed a double-double with 23
points and nine rebounds and Briante Weber filled up the stat sheet with eight
points, 10 assists, nine rebounds, and five steals.
The Monarchs (1-8) lost their seventh consecutive game despite game-highs of
26 points and 10 rebounds by DeShawn Painter. Donte Hill contributed 13
points, six assists, and four steals in the losing effort.
VCU built a 20-10 lead less than eight minutes after tip-off after Daniels
knocked down three shots from beyond the arc during that span. Daniels
finished the first half with 18 points, all of which came courtesy of jumpers
from behind the arc. The Monarchs went into halftime trailing 43-30 after they
shot 37 percent from the field and converted only 8-of-16 free throw attempts
in the opening 20 minutes. VCU made 50 percent of its field goal attempts
including 8-of-15 from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Rams led by a double-digit margin for the final 20 minutes as they
protected their lead by sinking 13-of-15 shots from the charity stripe. ODU
improved to connect on 45.5 percent of its field goal attempts after the
break, but only knocked down 1-of-6 from three-point range.
ODU held a 43-33 advantage in the rebounding battle, but it was unable to
overcome its 15 turnovers and 11 missed free throws.
VCU is in its first season as a member of the Atlantic 10 after formerly being
a Colonial Athletic Association rival of the Monarchs.
