Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Troy Daniels led four Rams who scored in
double figures with 16 points as Virginia Commonwealth completed a 73-54 rout
of the Alabama Crimson Tide at the Siegal Center.
Treveon Graham added 14 points and six rebounds for VCU (7-3), which picked up
its fourth win in a row. Melvin Johnson chipped in 12 points off the bench,
Rob Brandenberg tallied 10 points, and D.J. Haley anchored the defensive
effort with two blocks.
Devonta Pollard paced Alabama (6-3) with 13 points and Levi Randolph netted 10
points. The Crimson Tide have now lost three in a row. The contest was the
first return to the Siegal Center for Anthony Grant, who coached VCU to a
76-25 record in three seasons from 2006-09.
The Crimson Tide got off to a slow start and managed to connect on just 35.3
percent of their field goal attempts in the first half. VCU took a 33-18 lead
into the intermission after it forced the visitors into 13 turnovers in the
opening 20 minutes.
Johnson and Daniels combined for 17 second half points to help the Rams extend
their advantage after the break. VCU drained 57.1 percent of its field goals
in the second half while Alabama converted 13-of-15 attempts at the charity
stripe, but went 10-of-24 from the field.
Alabama finished with a season-high total of 18 turnovers, which the Rams
converted into 19 points.
