El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Konner Tucker and Jacques Street tallied 17
points each to lift the Texas-El Paso Miners to a 68-52 victory over the
Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Sun Bowl Invitational championship game at the Don
Haskins Center.
John Bohannon grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots for the Miners (6-5),
who have a record that is better than .500 for the first time this season
since their 1-0 start.
Nebraska (8-4) was led by Ray Gallegos, who went 9-of-15 from the field for a
game-high 22 points. Dylan Talley finished 0-of-8 from the floor for four
points in the loss. Brandon Ubel got into the mix with 11 points, but also
committed a game-high four turnovers.
The Cornhuskers were ice cold at the start of the contest as they made just
23.1 percent of their field goal attempts in the first period. UTEP knocked
down 48.1 percent of its shots from the field to take a sizeable 36-16 lead
into the intermission.
Although Nebraska improved to knock down 52 percent of its attempts from the
floor after the break, the Miners knocked down 4-of-10 from three-point range
to protect their lead.
UTEP won the battle inside as it held a 36-30 advantage on the glass and
outscored Nebraska, 30-18, in the paint.
