Monroe, LA (Sports Network) - Trent Mackey drained a three-pointer with eight
seconds remaining to give the ULM Warhawks a 65-64 victory over the Florida
Atlantic Owls, in a Sun Belt Conference showdown at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
For the Warhawks (2-7, 1-2 SBC), Jayon James posted a double-double with a
game-high 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Mackey added 19 points and
Marcelis Hansberry chipped in with 10 points.
Greg Gantt led the Owls (6-8, 2-2) with 25 points, while Pablo Bertone
finished with 16 points and Jordan McCoy tallied 14 points.
ULM shot just 34.4 percent from the field in the first half, but took a 28-26
advantage into halftime, its first lead at the break all season. FAU shot
45.5 percent from the field but allowed the Warhawks to take 10 more shots in
the first half.
After halftime, both teams found their shooting touch. ULM connected on 51.6
percent of their field goal attempts, including 4-of-11 from 3-point
range. Again, the Owls were the better shooting team, connecting on 65 percent
from the field, but again they gave ULM extra opportunities to score,
allowing the Warhawks 11 more shot attempts. The Owls used a 12-0 run
early in the second half to turn a two-point deficit into a 10-point
lead, 40-30. They still led by four with 54 seconds to play, before the
Warhawks scored the final five points of the contest, including
Mackey's game-winner, allowing the Redhawks to snap a three-game losing
streak.
For the Redhawks, 16 of their 30 rebounds were offensive, leading to 19 second
chance points. ULM outscored FAU in the paint, 38-30.
