West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Terone Johnson registered a double-
double and made a game-tying layup in the final minute of regulation to help
the Purdue Boilermakers pick up a 65-62 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes
in a Big Ten Conference overtime thriller at Mackey Arena.
Johnson finished with 17 points and 12 boards for Purdue (11-9, 4-3 Big Ten),
which picked up its fourth win in five outings. Ronnie Johnson added 15
points, Donnie Hale scored 12, and D.J. Byrd provided 10 points, seven boards,
and four assists.
Mike Gesell paced Iowa (13-7, 2-5) with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the
field. Roy Devyn Marble, Aaron White, and Melsahn Basabe scored 12 points
apiece in the Hawkeyes' second consecutive setback.
Purdue jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the early stages of the contest and went
on to take a 19-16 lead into the intermission. The Hawkeyes were lucky to be
trailing by one three after 20 minutes of play, as they went 4-of-26 from the
floor in the first half.
Iowa faced a 45-34 deficit with just eight minutes left in regulation, but it
stormed back and White converted a traditional three-point play to give it a
51-50 edge on the scoreboard with only 2:56 showing on the clock. With under a
minute left to play, Devyn Marble added another point from the free throw line
before Johnson evened the score to force an extra session.
Purdue scored six unanswered points to break a 59-59 tie in the overtime
period.
The Boilermakers outscored the visitors, 38-22, in the paint en route to the
decision.
