Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Anderson raced down the court and
scooped in a layup with 0.2 seconds remaining in overtime to give the San
Diego Toreros a thrilling 69-68 win over the Loyola Marymount Lions
in West Coast Conference action at Gersten Pavilion.
With 5.1 seconds left in the extra period, Anthony Ireland had an opportunity
to add to a 68-67 lead for the Lions (8-14, 1-8 WCC), but he missed the front
end of a one-and-one at the free-throw line. Chris Manresa claimed the rebound
for the Toreros (12-12, 5-4) and got the ball to Anderson who subsequently hit
the game-winner at the other end of the floor as USD snapped a four-game
slide.
Anderson finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the
Toreros, while Johnny Dee logged a team-best 15 points. Also in double figures
for the visitors were Manresa and Ken Rancifer with 12 and 11 points,
respectively.
The Lions, losers of six straight and eight of the last nine, were paced by
Ireland and Ayodeji Egbeyemi with 17 points apiece, the latter clearing 11
rebounds as well. Ashley Hamilton logged a double-double for the hosts with 11
points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the setback.
San Diego led by as many as six points in the first half, the team shooting an
impressive 51.9 percent from the floor in the period. However, the Toreros hit
just 5-of-13 shots at the free-throw line and allowed the hosts to convert a
sizzling 61.5 percent from the field as the Lions moved out to a 40-38
advantage at the break.
In the second half both squads dropped below 37 percent from the floor and
while Alex Osborne provided LMU with a 64-62 lead with 48.3 seconds left in
regulation, Anderson knocked down a couple of free throws 10 seconds later to
lock the score at 64-64 and send the meeting into overtime.
San Diego shot just 1-of-5 from the floor in the bonus session, but that one
conversion proved to be the game winner.
In a game that featured 15 ties and 19 lead changes, the Toreros survived
despite shooting only 14-of-25 at the free-throw line.
