Madison, WI (Sports Network) - Ben Brust led four Badgers in double-figures
with 18 points as Wisconsin outlasted the Iowa Hawkeyes for a 74-70 victory in
a double-overtime Big Ten Conference thriller at the Kohl Center.
Jared Berggren registered a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds to go
along with seven blocks for Wisconsin (16-7, 7-3 Big Ten) as it picked up its
second consecutive decision. Ryan Evans finished with 15 points, nine
rebounds, and five assists while Traevon Jackson contributed 13 points for the
Badgers.
Mike Gesell paced Iowa (14-9, 3-7) with 14 points. Aaron White added 13 points
while Zach McCabe chipped in 10 points off the bench for the Hawkeyes, who
fell for the fourth time in five games.
Wisconsin held a 28-17 lead with 6:14 minutes remaining before halftime, but
Iowa charged back to narrow the deficit and go into the intermission trailing
by a narrow, 31-29, margin. The Badgers shot 42.9 percent from the field and
limited Iowa to 35.5 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes to build their
early advantage.
The Hawkeyes took control in the second stanza and held a 51-42 lead with 6:18
left in regulation, but the hosts went on an 8-0 run to narrow the gap.
Jackson knocked down a 3-point attempt with 19 seconds showing on the clock to
even the score at 58 and Iowa's Josh Oglesby missed a potential game-winner as
time expired. The Hawkeyes converted 8-of-9 at the charity stripe while
Wisconsin went 2-of-5 at the free-throw line in the second half.
Neither team found much success in the first overtime as they tallied four
points apiece. Jackson tied the score at 62 with a pair of makes at the free
throw line with 1:15 left in the inaugural extra session, but neither team
managed to score again.
Wisconsin went up by four points in the second overtime period. After White
put in a layup to make it a one possession game, Iowa fouled Evans to extend
the game. Evans, who came into the contest shooting 40.4 percent from the
charity stripe, drained both attempts to seal the deal.
The evenly matched bout was reflected in the rebounding battle as Iowa held a
narrow, 51-49, edge on the glass.
