Honolulu, HI (Sports Network) - Christian Standhardinger put up 20 points and
nine rebounds as the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors held off the UC Irvine Anteaters,
78-72, in a Big West Conference clash at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hauns Brereton shot just 2-of-11 from the field but made all 12 of his free-
throw attempts on his way to 16 points for Hawaii (15-9, 9-4 Big West), which
has won a season-high five straight games. Vander Joaquim tallied his ninth
double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Isaac Fotu
netted 11 points for the hosts.
For UCI (12-13, 6-6), Alex Young shot 8-of-13 from the field for 20 points
while adding seven assists and seven rebounds for good measure. Daman Starring
poured in 18 points and Chris McNealy netted 10 points for the Anteaters, who
have dropped back-to-back games.
UCI took a 34-31 lead into intermission by shooting 50 percent from the field
in the first half. Hawaii made less than 39 percent of its attempts from the
floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Trailing by seven early in the second half, the Rainbow Warriors ripped off a
14-0 run to take a 49-42 advantage with 11:29 remaining, and they would never
relinquish the lead from that point on.
Hawaii shot just 3-of-16 from beyond the arc, but it pieced together an
impressive 21-of-27 showing from the foul line. UCI was just 5-of-7 from the
stripe.
