Boone, NC (Sports Network) - Mike Groselle registered a double-double with 22
points and 14 rebounds to lift The Citadel Bulldogs to an 80-77 overtime win
over the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a Southern Conference clash at the
Holmes Center.
Matt Van Scyoc scored a game-high 24 points for The Citadel (7-19, 4-12
SoCon), while P.J. Horgan notched 10 points and Marshall Harris III dished out
nine assists.
Tab Hamilton, Mike Neal and Tevin Baskin all netted 13 points for ASU (12-15,
8-8). Jamaal Trice added 11 points off the bench.
ASU shot 53.8 percent in the first half and outscored The Citadel 10-2 in
transition. However, the Bulldogs caught fire late and tied the score at 34-34
heading into the locker rooms.
The Citadel scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half to take a
46-36 lead before the first media timeout. ASU battled back and led 68-64 late
in the action when Van Scyoc converted a layup with 42 seconds remaining to
cut the deficit to two. After Baskin missed the front end of a one-and-one,
Groselle tied the score at 68-68 with a layup to force overtime. Both of the
final baskets came on Harris III assists.
After Van Scyoc got the Bulldogs going in the extra session with a jumper,
Groselle scored the final nine points for The Citadel, including the decisive
layup with 48 seconds left and two free throws with four seconds remaining.
Neal's last second 3-point try was off the mark.
Despite the loss, ASU still leads the all-time series with The Citadel, 51-25.
