Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - P.J. Hairston poured in a game-high 23
points and North Carolina head coach Roy Williams earned his 700th win, as the
Tar Heels held off Villanova, 78-71, on Friday in a second-round matchup in
the South Region of the NCAA Tournament at the Sprint Center.
James Michael McAdoo followed with 17 points, while Reggie Bullock and Marcus
Paige added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Tar Heels (25-10), who
have won 11 consecutive opening-round games in the NCAA Tournament.
Williams' former team -- top-seeded Kansas -- could await the coach's current
team in the third round, as the Tar Heels will play the winner between the
Jayhawks and Western Kentucky on Sunday.
JayVaughn Pinkston paced Villanova (20-14) with 20 points and eight rebounds,
while Darrun Hilliard donated 18 points and Mouphtaou Yarou added 17 for the
Wildcats, who lost to North Carolina in the Final Four back in 2009.
