JONESBORO, Ark. (ArkSt.) - Arkansas State women's basketball coach Brian Boyer has announced the addition of Amanda Lawson, a junior college player from Kilgore College in Texas.
Lawson, a 5-foot-10 forward, will be eligible to play for the Red Wolves in 2014-15 after originally playing for Houston as a freshman in 2011-12.
As a sophomore at Kilgore this past season, Lawson averaged 12.6 points per game, pulled down 6.5 boards per night and dished out nearly three assists per outing. She started in 20 of the 24 games she played in and scored a season-high 25 points against Southwestern Christian College and also had two games where scored 22 points against McLennan Community College and Tyler Junior College.
She recorded two double-doubles on the year, which came in the first and last games of her season. She began the 2012-13 season with a 14-point and 11 rebound night against Collin County Community College on November 8 and ended the year with a 17-point, 12 rebound performance against Angelina College on March 2.
As a freshman at Houston, Lawson was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team after leading all freshmen in the league 9.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She was the team leader in rebounds and finished second on the team in scoring. She started in 25 of the 26 games she appeared and averaged nearly 31 minutes a night. Lawson scored in double figures in 12 games, 11 of which where in league games. In C-USA play she averaged 10 points per game, shot 36 percent from the field and 60 percent from the free throw line.
Lawson earned C-USA Freshman of the Week honors in January of 2012 after averaging 14 points, four rebounds and 2.5 steals in a pair of wins over Southern Methodist and Alabama-Birmingham. She scored a season-high 24 points against Houston Baptist, including a first half where she went 11-of-19 from the field. Her 24 points were the most by any Houston freshman since the 2006 season.
The Texas native attended Bryan High School in Bryan, Texas where she played with current A-State players Carlette and Carlisha Wyatt. She was a 5A First-Team All-State selection as a senior and was a Texas Girls' Coaches Association All-Star after averaging 22 points and 13 rebounds per game.
Lawson originally signed with Texas Tech this past spring, but received her release after a coaching change occurred at the school.
