Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - J.L. Lewis, a two-time winner on the PGA
Tour, announced via Twitter that he has cancer.
Lewis was competing at the Champions Tour's Tradition, the year's second
major. He was eight-over par through three rounds when he pulled out of the
event Saturday.
"JL withdrew from the Regions Tradition this afternoon. We just found out that
J.L. has a serious form of bone marrow cancer," his wife put on Lewis' Twitter
account.
"The condition is treatable and the [doctor] feels he can get back to health &
playing golf in the future. Keep JL in your prayers."
The 51-year-old Lewis won the 1999 John Deere Classic and the 2003 84 Lumber
Classic on the PGA Tour. Since joining the Champions Tour two years ago, his
best finishes came at the 2010 Tradition and the 2011 SAS Championship. He
tied for sixth at both events.
In his first eight tournaments this year, Lewis has a pair of top 20s and they
came in his first two starts of the season.
