FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) – The Arkansas baseball team (11-8, 1-3 SEC) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Friday evening, dropping the series opener to Alabama (15-6, 3-1) 17-9 at Baum Stadium.
The Razorbacks scored nine runs for the second straight SEC contest, but the Crimson Tide countered with 15 runs in a three-inning span to seize control of the game after a 53-minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning.
Arkansas left seven runners on base through the first three innings, before Tyler Spoon came to the plate in the fourth with the bases loaded and unloaded on a grand slam to erase a 3-0 deficit and give the Razorbacks their first lead of the day.
The Razorbacks added a pair of runs in the fifth inning and three more in the ninth, as Bobby Wernes tallied three hits in the contest, including a ninth-inning RBI double to bring Clark Eagan to the plate.
Zach Jackson (1-1) suffered the loss for Arkansas in 1.0 inning of relief work, while Jay Shaw (1-1) picked up the win for Alabama after tossing 4.0 innings and giving up two hits and no runs.
The Razorbacks continue their three-game weekend set with Alabama Saturday at 2:05 p.m. at Baum Stadium with the series finale slated for Sunday at 1:05 p.m. on Cox Sports Television and ESPN3.
