Golden Suns Defeat Savage Storm 79-76

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (ATU) - Freshman Anissa Pounds gathered a season-high 27 points, while sophomore Krisztina Velkey had 15 points and junior Jacinda Myers-Sanders totaled 16 points as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (16-8, 12-6 GAC) defeated the Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm (13-11, 10-8 GAC) Monday night at Tucker Coliseum.

The first point of the game came from a good free-throw shot from Caroline Eubanks at the 17:04 mark. The Golden Suns would extend their lead to as much as 13 (36-23) with 1:57 to go on a good jumper from Velkey. The Savage Storm would narrow Tech's lead to 37-28 going into the half.

Tech held a 14-6 advantage in the paint and a 9-0 advantage off of turnovers.

The second half had five ties and six lead changes. Southeastern got on early scoring the first point of the second half on a 3-pointer from Kiser. The Savage Storm would narrow Tech's lead to one with 13:59 to go on a jumper from Ruud. The score would tie up 46-46 with 12:46 to go.

The two teams would trade possessions for the next few minutes until the Savage Storm would take a four point lead (53-57) after a 3-pointer from Williams. The Golden Suns responded with a 3-pointer from Pounds. After eight made free-throws from Pounds in a row, the Golden Suns would lead 76-74 with 1:05 to go.

With seven seconds left in the game, the Savage Storm would make the score 77-76 on a free-throw from Williams. The Golden Suns held off the Savage Storm offense for the final seconds and with two free-throw shots from Pounds, Tech took the game 79-76.

Tech was dominant in the paint with having a 22-12 advantage. The Golden Suns shot 50 percent from the field and 74.4 percent from the free-throw line.

The Golden Suns will travel to Searcy, Ark. on Thursday, Feb. 27 for a game against Harding. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
