Tavares done for season with a knee injury

Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Islanders center John Tavares will apparently miss the remainder of the season with a left knee injury.

Tavares took a hard hit from Latvian defenseman Arturs Kulda in the second period of Canada's 2-1 victory on Wednesday at the Sochi Games.

After Canadian head coach Mike Babcock confirmed that Tavares would be sidelined the remainder of the tournament, Newsday reported on Thursday that the Islanders captain suffered tears in both his MCL and meniscus.

Tavares may need surgery to repair the knee, but the Isles do expect him to be ready for training camp in September according to the report.

Tavares is third in the NHL in scoring with 66 points in 59 games. He had not scored in four games for Team Canada.
