Court deputies had to break up a physical fight between a Brevard County judge and a public defender after an argument during a hearing on Monday. Judge John Murphy is accused of punching veteran public defender Andrew Weinstock after the two had words during court in which Murphy allegedly pressured Weinstock to get his client to waive his right to a speedy trial. The judge allegedly asked Weinstock to come to the back hallway, an area where there are no cameras, which is where the fight broke out.
Weather officials in Albuquerque say a mysterious presence that showed up on its radar the last few nights has turned out to be of the insect variety. The National Weather Service says a swarm of grasshoppers were detected over Albuquerque's West Mesa for the fourth night in a row on Friday. Meteorologist Chuck Jones says the swarm got caught up in winds heading southwest and is being carried as high as 1,000 feet. Jones says the grasshoppers likely hatched weeks ago and are now grown, leading to their ability to trigger radar images. Officials say last year's monsoon season and a drier winter created the ideal environment for the grasshoppers to hatch. Technicians initially thought their equipment was malfunctioning when they saw several unexplained clusters.
The world toe wrestling championships kicked off in a Derbyshire pub this weekend, while the Cotswold Olympicks shin-kicking contest took place. Based on the better-known sport of arm wrestling, toe wrestling sees competitors use their feet and toes to overpower their opponent. The sport was invented in 1976 when regulars at a Derbyshire pub set about searching for a game that the British could win. A decision was made to invent a new one. Locals in Wetton - where the game was born - have been dominating the sport ever since. Meanwhile in Dover's Hill the 402nd Cotswold Olimpicks once again held the brutal world shin kicking championships. Opponents try to fell each other with kicks to the shin while staying gripped at the shoulders.
A wedding party took a plunge in Minnesota lake when a dock gave way under their weight. Dan and Jackie Anderson lined up on a dock with all their groomsmen and bridesmaids for a photo shoot about an hour before the wedding was due to begin. But the weight of the 22 people was too much for the dock and it collapsed beneath them into the lake. A couple of bridesmaids were able to dash off the dock, but the rest ended up in waist- or chest-deep water. The bride, groom and their entire wedding party were still drying off as the guests arrived for the wedding.
