JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State University says the number of foreign language offerings is continuing to drop, even though more students are enrolling in the courses.

The Jonesboro Sun reports ( that Arkansas State offered six languages four years ago: Spanish, German, Chinese, French, Swahili and Arabic.

Since then, the school has dropped Swahili and Arabic. Department chairwoman Yvonne Unnold says that German, Chinese and French are also in danger of being dropped.

She says the school has seen a 55 percent increase of students enrolling in language courses over the previous four years.

Unnold and other school officials say that the job market is competitive - so it's even more important for students to speak more than one language.
