BOLIVAR, Mo. (UAM) - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team relinquished a 10-point lead with less than eight minutes in regulation in a 79-68 loss to Southwest Baptist on Thursday for UAM's first loss of the 2012-13 season.
The Boll Weevils (1-1) used a 13-2 scoring run to take a double-digit lead at the 13:30 mark of the second half and led 62-52 with 7:30 remaining following a dunk by junior Dayton Mickens. The Bearcats (1-3) responded with an 11-0 scoring run over the next three minutes to take a one-point lead with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.
SBU outscored UAM 26-7 in the final seven minutes to secure the victory. The Bearcats' pressure defense was too much for UAM to handle in the final seven minutes with UAM committing seven turnovers during that stretch.
Senior Kori Forge picked up his second 20-point game of the season with 21 points after making 7-of-19 shots, including 2-of-10 three-pointers. Forge added his final five points at the foul line, where he was a perfect 5-for-5. Juniors Amir Royal and Michael Maya also reached double-digits for UAM in scoring with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
As a team, UAM shot 44 percent from the field (23-of-52), 39 percent on three-pointers (10-of-26) and 87 percent at the foul line (13-of-15). SBU shot an even 50 percent from the field (30-of-60), 33 percent on three-pointers (7-of-21) and 85 percent on foul shots (11-of-13).
The Bearcats won the rebounding battle 34-26, including a 13-8 edge on the offensive glass, which led to 22 second-chance points for SBU.
SBU placed five scorers in double-digits, led by Gilbert Gyamfi with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Boll Weevils are back in action this Saturday at home against Crowley's Ridge College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Steelman Fieldhouse.
