State troopers were back on the job Friday, following up a fatal car wreck Thursday along Highway 7, north of Bismarck.
While they worked to figure out why this crash happened, signs of a tough loss also linger at the scene. Our cameras caught a mother consoling her daughter, who knew one of the fatal victims, 16-year-old Jose Miguel Hernandez.
"He was never mean. He always was nice, and he never really tried to do anything that would be mean to you or anything," Gabbi Harvey said.
Harvey knew Miguel, as she called him, from Bismarck High School. She and some family members put up a memorial for him Friday.
"He loved his little sister, he loved his brother, he loved his mom and dad, and he had pictures he would show me. He was pretty proud of them," Harvey said.
Known as a loving teenager, Harvey wants to make sure people don't forget him.
"I don't want to ever have that feeling that I will forget him. I don't want to think that there will be a day where I don't even remember Miguel. I just don't want that to happen," Harvey said.
She's keeping Miguel in their thoughts and prayers as state troopers search for clues to this terrible tragedy.
Authorities said the driver of the car that hit Miguel's family was 37-year-old Brandy Kizziar. She died in the crash.
THV 11 Newswent to her listed address in state police reports to see any of her family could shed light on what happened, but nobody was home at the time.
There was a third car involved in the crash. Sgt. Casey, with State Police, said the female driver of that car only sustained minor injuries and was the only person in the vehicle.
State policereport those who were killed are Edgar Rocha Martinez, 41, Eva Figueroa Hernandez, 40, Brandy Kizziar, 36, Jose Miguel Hernandez, 16, and Chris Anthony Rocha, 2, all of Bismarck.
According to the accident report, Kizziar was driving north in a Chevy Trailblazer on Hwy 7 when she crossed into the southbound lane striking a Chevy truck, driven by Edgar Martinez, head on.
The third vehicle, a Chevy Malibu, traveling southbound hit the back of the truck. All three vehicles came to rest on the west side of the highway in the southbound lane.
The driver of the Malibu, a 54-year-old woman, and a fourth passenger in the truck, a 5-year-old girl, survived the crash.
According to Sgt. Ron Casey of ASP Troop K, police do not know why Kizziar crossed the center lane, where she was coming from, or where the passengers in the second vehicle coming from.
