Here in Arkansas, Acxiom of Little Rock falling under the scrutiny of the federal government.

The data services company is one of nine data brokers Federal Trade Commission plans to examine to find out where how they gather information, how they use it and whether consumers can see their data.

The Chief Privacy Officer of Acxiom said in an email to the New York Times that it will cooperate with the inquiry -- and that the company looks at the investigation as an chance to promote a better understanding of how Acxiom works.

Acxiom maintains databases of individual consumer information for marketing and sales purposes.

And finally, Windstream Corp. of Little Rock says it will pay an Oklahoma school foundation $100,000 as part of an agreement with that state to dismiss bribery and conspiracy charges filed against it by a grand jury in August.

Windstream denies any wrongdoing and said it entered the agreement to dismiss the charges "in the interest of reaching a compromise acceptable to it and to the state."

The Oklahoma indictment alleged that Windstream offered a school district superintendent tickets to the 2007 NCAA basketball tournament in Atlanta and other perks as a bribe to ensure Windstream kept the district's Internet services businesses.

As part of the agreement, filed Wednesday in Oklahoma District Court, Windstream says it will "take certain steps affirming its commitment" to following federal, state and local laws.

The company will also pay the Broken Arrow school foundation $100,000,a donation ineligible for tax deductions.
