SEARCY, Ark. (Harding) - Five Harding football players were named to the 2012 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region Three team this week. Sophomore fullback Romo Westbrook was Harding's lone 1st Team honoree. Senior offensive tackle Austin Smithey and senior defensive end Ty Powell were 2nd Team, and sophomore kicker John Gay and senior cornerback Roderick Cohn were 3rd Team.
Westbrook, a native of Marion, Ark., rushed for 655 yards on 110 carries with five touchdowns. He ranked 10th in the Great American Conference with 59.5 rushing yards per game.
Smithey is a native of Mesquite, Texas and started all 11 games at tackle. He was the top offensive lineman for the Bisons, whose flexbone offense finished fourth in Division II with 320.6 rushing yards per game.
A possible NFL Draft selection, Powell made 40 tackles, including 15.0 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. He also tied a school record with four blocked kicks. A native of Marina, Calif., Powell ranked second in the GAC in sacks and third in tackles for loss.
Gay, a native of Jonesboro, Ark., connected on 14-of-18 field goals and made all 43 extra-point attempts, the most in one season by a Harding kicker without a miss.
A native of Long Beach, Calif., Cohn had 18 tackles, one interception and four pass breakups.
All five players were named 1st Team All-GAC following the season. It was the first All-Super Region honor for each of the players.
