LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - If proposed legislation in the Arkansas State Capitol gets approval, employees will be allowed to bring their guns to work. However, they'd have to stay locked in their vehicle.
This bill applies only to concealed carry license holders and does not apply to prohibited places already specified in law.House Bill 1269 is sponsored byRep. John Catlett, D- 73.
This controversial bill protects the gun owner from being fired if the employer finds out you have a gun inside your car.
"I do own guns. I hunt," said Riddle, a hair stylist and concealed gun carrier. She doesn't support a House bill that allows concealed licensed carriers to leave their guns in a locked car in their workplace parking lot. She says it's a step in the right direction, but would also like a state law allowing concealed carriers to carry guns inside the building.
"It's kind of a frivolous law myself," said Riddle who wonders what good is a gun if it's locked in your car. "What do you say, put down your gun and let me run to my car?"
Preston's Salon does not have restrictions on bringing your concealed gun into the building. Nonetheless, Owner Lynn Eastep still has reservations.
"If there are 11 people with guns in my building that will make me nervous I think. I don't know why, just because it's so many." said Eastep.
Riddle wants her rights protected not just outside but inside the building. She believes she's earned it.
"I've been raised around guns my entire life. As a child, I was taught responsibility and safety," said Riddle.
Manager of Don's Weaponry Chuck Lawson supports the bill.
"There's been written instances where they've done a search of a vehicle and found the firearm and then fired the employee," said Lawson.
Lawson says you can't expand the rights of one group and take away the rights of another.
"The business owner still has the right to say 'no' I don't want that in my building," said Lawson.
Lawson believes if the business does not allow the gun inside the building, the employer should provide security.
