LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- THV 11 Film Critic Jonathan Nettles on G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

I'll spare you plot summary ofG.I. Joe: Retaliation because if you haven't at least heard of popular toy brand from which its based, then you really have no reason to see it unless you're in the mood for an action movie, in which case you're going to see it based on the trailer and don't care what it's really about.

Retaliation was originally slated for a summer 2012 release but about 30 days before its release, it was delayed to allow for more 3D conversion and to beef up the parts starring Channing Tatum as Duke. Why would they need to beef up the parts with Channing Tatum? Hasn't he been a key part in the marketing of the film? He was the star of the first film and his career is on the rise so surely, they took advantage of that. Nope. SPOILER ALERT: Tatum's character Duke is killed off in the first 30 minutes of the film. Everyone else that was in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is gone too. They never even mention what happened to them. The only survivor from Rise of Cobra is Snake Eyes.

Was the movie good? Eh, it was okay. It didn't do much for me. The movie took itself way too seriously giving us background stories on nearly every character, including a very strange one about the relationship between Snake Eyes and Stormshadow that nearly brought the movie to a halt. Ironically, that backstory was the most interesting aspect of Rise but this one adds RZA as the blind leader of their clanand it immediately turns into a joke. I blame it on a flow problem. I think they shot the film and realized that they needed something to fit between action sequences. Those action sequences almost make up for a lackluster film with characters that you don't really care about, Snake Eyes excluded. The Cobra Commander prison escape sequence and the capture of Storm Shadow in the Himalayan Mountains were both very cool. Speaking of Cobra Commander, he wasn't featured as prominently in this film as I'd hoped for and he only walked in slow motion.

It's an action movie that isn't a cool action movie. My recommendation, if you want a good action movie and you are over 18, go see Olympus Has Fallen. If you are under 18 or are a parent of boys who like Transformers or Rise of Cobra, then this movie will be what you're looking for.

And now you know...
