OXFORD, Miss. (HARDING) - Harding senior Portia Bell and sophomore Ewa Zaborowska continued their outstanding 2013 outdoor track and field seasons Saturday at the Ole Miss Invitational.
Bell, a native of Pacoima, Calif., defeated 48 other runners to win the 400 meters in 54.44 seconds. The time broke her own school record and was the seventh-fastest time in NCAA Division II this season. Bell has won both of her 400-meter races this season and now has eight event victories in her career.
Zaborowska, who hails from Wejherowo, Poland, outran 60 competitors to win the 1,500 meters in 4:26.24, also a new Harding record and the second-fastest time in Division II. Zaborowska has won four of the five 1,500-meter races she has won in her career and has eight total outdoor event victories.
Harding also set another school record in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of Shana Holmes, Kristen Celsor, Sarah Coleman and Bell placed third of 12 teams in 3:46.97, the 12th-fastest time this season in Division II.
Senior Tiffany Chambers was Harding's top finisher in the field events. Chambers placed third in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 11.75 inches. It was an NCAA provisional mark, but was not her best result of the season. Last week, Chambers broke the school record in the pole vault at 12 feet, 6 inches.
Celsor, a native of Searcy, Ark., placed fourth of 18 competitors in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 5 inches.
In the men's field, Harding junior Andrew Evans posted the first NCAA provisional time of the season for the Bisons on Saturday at the Ole Miss Invitational.
Evans, a native of Rogers, Ark., won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9 minutes, 19.90 seconds. It was his second straight steeplechase victory and third in his career. It was the 14th-fastest steeplechase time in Division II this season. The top 20 times at the end of the season receive an invitation to the outdoor national meet.
Harding set its best marks of the season in four other events. Freshman Corey Bassett placed 14th in the 100 meters in 10.81. Senior Landon Belcher placed eighth in the 400 meters in 48.41.
Stephen Hedlund's time of 57.87 in the 400 hurdles was Harding's best this year. Ryan Cagle placed 12th in the shot put with a season-best mark of 47 feet, 6.50 inches.
Logan Green had a top-10 finish in the 5,000 meters. He placed eighth in 15:40.15.
