MCKINNEY, Texas _ Riding a 2-under par 70 from freshman James Newton on Monday, the University of Central Arkansas men's golf team sits in first place after the first round of the 2013 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship being played at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
Newton, from Macclesfield, England, eagled the par-5 third hole en route to his 2-under round, which puts him alone in first place at the Pete Dye Signature Course. Senior Austen Moix is tied for third after shooting a 2-over 74. Sophomore Pep Angles is tied for sixth with a 4-over 76, while freshman Jacob Oaks is tied for 20th (79) and junior Richard Farmer is 36th (86).
UCA (299) had a two-stroke lead over Southeastern Louisiana (301), followed by Lamar (307), Stephen F. Austin (313), Oral Roberts (317), Sam Houston State (319), Nicholls State (322) and McNeese State (325).
Newton was medalist at UCA's past two tournaments leading up to the SLC Championships. UCA is the top-rated team entering the tournament, according to Golfstat rankings.
