The Frenchman Paire defeated Dutchman Igor Sijsling 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at this clay-court tournament.
Also on Day 1, Belgian David Goffin held off Portuguese wild card Pedro Sousa 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-4, Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin overcame Russian Evgeny Donskoy 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, and France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin was leading Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 6-1 after one set when Muller retired. Roger- Vasselin is rewarded with a second-round match against top-seeded world No. 4 star David Ferrer.
Two-time reigning champion Juan Martin del Potro is not defending his titles this week. The former U.S. Open winner beat Frenchman Richard Gasquet in last year's finale in Estoril.
The 2013 Portugal Open winner will collect $96,000.
