LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - The Washington State bridge collapse had the team at THV 11 asking, could it happen in Arkansas?

A federal database says the I-5 bridge in Washington State is "functionally obsolete." Here in Arkansas, highway officials said 850 bridges are "structurally deficient."

Rick Ellis with the Arkansas Highway Department, said the bridges are safe to drive on but there's an element of those bridges that does not meet standards, depending on the bridge.

"They're all different. You may have a bridge that's low to the water that's moist all the time. It may rust faster. The paint would deteriorate faster," said Ellis.

Ellis said truss-style bridges like the one in Washington State were popular around 70 years ago to build.
