Stuttgart, Germany (Sports Network) - Former runner-up Tommy Haas posted a second-round victory Thursday at the $530,000 Mercedes Cup tennis event.
The top-seeded, long-time German crowd favorite humbled talented Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-0, 6-4 on the red clay at Weissenhof Tennis Club.
The 35-year-old Haas was the Stuttgart runner-up in 1999.
Also on Day 4, fourth-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire tackled one-time world No. 3 Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-1, fifth-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini drubbed Argentine Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-3, and Romanian Victor Hanescu handled Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-1, 6-4. Fognini is rewarded with a quarterfinal match against the former world No. 2 Haas.
Friday's other quarterfinals will pit second-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber against 2010 Stuttgart runner-up Gael Monfils of France, Paire versus the 2009 Stuttgart runner-up Hanescu, and German wild card Michael Berrer against Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
This week's champion will take home $110,000 and a brand new Mercedes-Benz sports car.
