BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) - Benton police say they have a man in custody who was trying to steal from an elderly Benton resident.

Sunday just before noon, a Benton police officer on patrol in the area of S. First Street saw a suspicious person leaning over some power tools.

When the officer stopped to investigate further, a neighbor told them they saw the suspect leave the backyard of a neighbor's house.

The officer talked with the suspect, 24-year-old James Gideon, about the tools. The officer later learned that the tools had been stolen from a house of S. First Street while the elderly resident was away at church.

Gideon was then arrested and charged withbreaking and entering and theft of property.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation and additional charges could be forthcoming.
