UNDATED (USA TODAY) -- She's just landed the lead female role in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie, but the casting decision may have left you wondering: Who exactly is Dakota Johnson?
Johnson, who will play Anastasia Steele in the film adaptation of E.L. James' best-selling erotic novel, is the daughter of screen veterans Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. She's also the granddaughter of the iconic Birds actress Tippi Hedren.
The 23-year-old actress made her film debut in 1999's Crazy in Alabama, in which she and her half-sister, Stella Banderas, played the daughters to their real-life mother, Griffith. The film was directed by Johnson's stepfather, Antonio Banderas.

In 2006, she was voted Miss Golden Globe, where she served as the first second-generation Miss Golden Globe -- mom Griffith was also Golden Globe royalty back in the day. That same year, Johnson signed with IMG Models and was the face of MANGO jeans in 2009.
In 2010, Johnson had a small role in The Social Network. Remember the scene where Napster founder Sean Parker -- played famously by Justin Timberlake -- has a one-night stand with a college student? That was Johnson.
Johnson's other film credits include Beastly, The Five-Year Engagement and 21 Jump Street. She also starred as Kate in the 2012-13 Fox comedy series Ben and Kate (the show was canceled after one season). She is currently shooting a new adaptation of Cymbeline.
In October, Johnson told USA TODAY that she always knew she wanted to be an actor. "This is my passion. This is my job. I love it more than anything," said Johnson. "I'm so happy when I'm working. I love doing improv. I love comedy. I have always felt this way, even when I was really young. I'd watch my parents work and think, yeah, I'm going to do that. It wasn't even a thing. It's the only thing I know how to do."
As for her personal life, Johnson said she's "more of a person who goes with the flow of things. I have a boyfriend that I've been with for a while. I've only been in long-term relationships. I've never really dated myself."
Johnson will star opposite Charlie Hunnam, who will play Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. It's set to steam up theaters Aug. 1, 2014.
