UNDATED (CNN) - There are reality shows for just about everything these days ... dancing, singing, cooking, you name it ... it's probably out there.
The goal of a new show is to send humans to Mars, but there's a catch: it's raising money for a one way trip!
Move over Space-x and Virgin Galactic, Mars One is aimed at forming a colony of humans on the red planet; it hopes to establish human settlement on Mars in 2023.
Bas Lansdorp, a Dutch engineer and entrepreneur, is looking for volunteers to construct living quarters and then live...on Mars...for the rest of their lives.
They haven't figured out the technology to fly people back to earth yet, so this is a one way trip.
To fund the project, the organizers are considering sponsoring a reality show in which the viewer can help choose who to send away forever.
Participants would have to go through 8 years of training before finally arriving on their new home planet. And apparently people are interested; the show has reportedly already had 200,000 applicants.
The project is slated for April 2023.
NASA has said it doesn't intend to send astronauts on round-trip journeys to mars until sometime in the 2030s.
