FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) - The University of Arkansas women's tennis team begins its 2013 fall season Friday with a dual-event weekend, as select Razorbacks compete at either the Little Rock Classic or the William & Mary Tribe Invitational.
"We are very excited to begin the fall season," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "Both of these events will provide our team with great competition and that's exactly what we need right now. The fall season is about development and focusing on improvement and that's exactly what we will do this weekend."
With both of this weekend's events taking place Sept. 20-22, Flavia Araujo, Brittany Huxley, Yang Pang and Kimberley - Ann Surin will travel to Little Rock, Ark., while Sarah McLean and Shannon Hudson will compete in Williamsburg, Va.
Joining Arkansas in attendance at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational is athletes from Dartmouth, Harvard, Marshall, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, VCU, Virginia and host William & Mary.
At the Little Rock Classic, the Razorbacks will be competing against athletes from Houston, Memphis, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Texas Tech.
Returning a young, tested and talented squad, the 2013-14 Arkansas Razorback women's tennis team looks to take the next step and build upon a number of breakout performances from last season. Featuring one of the youngest rosters in the country last season (seven freshmen, one sophomore, one senior), the Razorbacks return four of six starters from a team that ranked No. 52 in the ITA national rankings and finished 13-15 overall.
Seeing her first action as a Razorback this weekend will be freshman Shannon Hudson. A blue-chip recruit from Virginia Beach, Va., Hudson joins Arkansas as the team's lone newcomer this fall. She was ranked as the No. 18 recruit from the 2013 tennis recruiting class.
Competition at both events is scheduled to begin Friday. ArkansasRazorbacks.com will have complete and official recap of the Razorbacks' performance throughout the weekend.
