NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Highway Commission member John Burkhalter is resigning from his position so he can focus on running for lieutenant governor.
Burkhalter, of North Little Rock, said Friday that he would also leave three other boards as he pursues the Democratic nomination for the state's second-highest office.
The other panels Burkhalter is leaving include Pathfinder Inc., the University of Arkansas Campaign Arkansas Steering Committee and the Baptist Health Foundation.
Gov. Mike Beebe, also a Democrat, appointed Burkhalter to the Highway Commission in 2011.
Burkhalter is the only Democrat to have announced a run for lieutenant governor.
Two Republican state representatives, Charlie Collins and Andy Mayberry, are seeking the Republican nomination.
