SAN ANTONIO, TX (UCA) - The Central Arkansas women's soccer team returned to action on Sunday afternoon, hitting the road for San Antonio, Texas to face off against Southland Conference opponent Incarnate Word. The Bears came from behind twice to force overtime, where they completed the comeback to earn the 3-2 victory.
The Cardinals (8-4-0, 2-3-0 SLC) grabbed the lead in the 49th minute when Abigail Koenigs took a cross from Sarah Johnson and headed it home. Central Arkansas (6-4-2, 3-1-0 SLC) evened the score at 1-1 in the 53rd minute. Adriana Lucar passed to Sara Perlman, who chipped the ball over the UIW keeper to tie the game. Just eight minutes later, Incarnate Word retook the lead when Sydney Solomon lofted a cross in front of the UCA net, where it was slotted home by Katie Miller.
With just ten minutes to play in the match, Kristin Pollard struck for the Bears, knotting the score at 2-2 on a run through the Cardinal defense that ended in her second goal of the season. Neither team was able to find the game-winner in the final ten minutes of regulation, sending the game to overtime. The first overtime period failed to produce any goals, but Central Arkansas found the golden goal in the 106th minute. Central Arkansas drew a foul in the box, and Lauren Trueheart took the resulting free kick, clearing the UIW defense and putting the ball into the net for the game-winner.
Central Arkansas was very efficient on the day, scoring three goals on six shots, all of which were placed on goal. Lucar, Trueheart, Pollard, Perlman, Shelby Wilson, and Cassie Lange each took a shot for the Bears. Miller led the Cardinal offense, placing four of her eight shots on goal, while Koenigs was on target with four of her six shots. Lyndzey Goff made four saves in the first half for Central Arkansas, and Kaitlyn Keith made six in the second half while allowing two goals. Heather Kowalik made one first-half save for Incarnate Word, and Karly Brightwell added two in the second half while allowing three goals.
Central Arkansas returns to action at home next weekend, hosting a pair of Southland Conference matches. The Bears will welcome Southeastern Louisiana to the Bill Stephens Soccer Complex on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. Central Arkansas will then battle Nicholls State on Sunday afternoon at 1:00.
